Left Coast Live is excited for these guys to take the Main Stage Friday, June 25th alongside Ok Go and Neon Trees. Free Energy is an explosion of youthful, power-pop rock with a 70s swagger in 2010 post-Bush era.
If you haven’t heard of Free Energy, you’ve definitely heard the first few seconds of their track “Dream City” in those Flip camcorder commercials. The band, named after one of their songs, rocketed out of Pennsylvania’s indie music scene and has been generating a lot of buzz. Brothers Evan (bass) and Scott Wells (guitar) first played in the now-defunct indie band Hockey Night with Paul Sprangers (vocals) before forming Free Energy with Geoff Bucknum (guitar) and Nicholas Shuminsky (drums).
These talented musicians will blow you away with their dance-friendly hits and enthusiastic on-stage energy: they rock out with a passion. Free Energy is currently touring the U.S. promoting their debut album, Stuck on Nothing. The album was released in March under DFA Records and was produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
There’s been quite a bit of chatter in the music biz about the longhaired quintet. SPIN featured the band in the free album, 2010: A Look Ahead, back in January. In the March 17th issue of Rolling Stone, Free Energy was labeled one of the “Best New Bands of 2010.” In the same month, the guys performed “Free Energy” off their debut album on “The Late Show with Dave Letterman” and also performed at the SXSW festival.
Make sure to check out their video for “Bang Pop,” which premiered on MySpace in May. High school would’ve been a lot more entertaining had these guys been in your class.
Don’t miss out on the Free Energy fun because 2010 is sure to be their year.
